  1. On another board the orgin of 'Tea Money' is described as follows: "The history of tea money is that Thai towns have always had massage places, soapys, and all other classes of brothels.. Because prostitution is illegal they couldnt then be taxed, but in the Thai way they wanted to tax the businesses. So as a workaround all the P4P places were classed as 'Tea houses' and taxed on that basis.. So the money paid by 'Tea houses' to stay open then was 'Tea Money' and the term has become general use." http://www.phuket-info.com/forums/684022-post5.html

    Dr Aree

Can you provide more detail? What is it that sets her apart from other dentists, in your opinion? Also, can you provide contact information for those who may wish to try her? How did you happen upon her?
  3. Please post after you try Wi's. I am interested to know what you think of it. Also, I recently posted a question in the Recipe Exchange. So far nobody has responded. I am hoping you will have a response. I've tried all you have posted there and everything was great. Maybe you can offer some advice once again.
  4. It is the original location of Cherry's, before Cherry's moved to its current location. It's on Third Road, across the street from the X-zyte disco. The food is always presented beautifully, everyone is served simultaneously, the service is excellent, and the prices are reasonable. They do have a good Thai food menu too, although their web site doesn't show the items. Also, their web site doesn't show it, but every entree, Thai food too, includes a salad bar. They have a set menu that includes the salad bar, appetizer, soup (if you prefer a different soup from the set menu choice they will change it for you at no charge, even if your soup choice is more expensive than the choice on the set menu), choice of four main courses, dessert, and a glass of red or white wine for 495 baht.http://www.wis-restaurant.com
  5. You could always take your own shopping bag or plastic bags you've saved if you do not wish to pay for plastic bags.
  6. It applies to everyone. The verification letter is one of the few documents that does not have to be a week or less old. It can be months old.
  7. There will be no problem. The verification letter can be many months old and is fully acceptable provided that it is an original, embossed by the embassy.
  8. I think part of the problem in Thailand is lack of training for waiters. Even if they were to be trained, who would train them? In Thailand I expect consistently mediocre service at best and I am pleasantly surprised on the rare occasions when the service is better than mediocre. The only restaurants I have been to in Thailand at which the service could reasonably be called excellent are restaurants that are very expensive, much too expensive for me to go very often. As long as the food is good, I have learned to accept the service I get in Thailand. It is difficult for me to be critical when the waiters just don't know any better.
  9. I can never get a hamburger to come out any good using Thai ground beef. It's always too dry. Does anyone have a good hamburger recipe that might solve that problem? I don't want a recipe for hot dogs, but in Thailand I have never found any kind of hot dogs, even at places such as Villa Market, that taste like American hot dogs. Most of the Thai hot dogs seem to be nearly flavorless and buying imported brands at Villa Market are much too expensive for me. Can anyone recommend a hot dog type that at least comes close to the typical American hot dog?
  10. In Thailand I have had no problem finding rye flour. Many different grocery stores carry it, including Tops, Foodland, and Villa Market.
  11. This list most definitely goes to show that most Thai restaurants, including many that are farang owned, have a lot to learn.
  12. That may not be correct. I got my verification letter four months in advance and immigration readily accepted it. I would like to suggest checking with immigration to see how far in advance they will accept the letter. It might very well save you a trip to Bangkok.

    Meteor Shower

The best time to view the meteors will be between about 2:30am to 4:30am, but you should be able to spot some starting about 10:00pm. If you have no way to get away from the city lights, try to get as high as you can in a tall building.
  14. I believe that policy is also the case at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
  15. I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you are talking about.

    Eating Cockroaches

I had it served to me once right here in Thailand. I was with two Thai friends who loved it. As for me, I couldn't even look at it. They thought the fact that I was disgusted by it was hilarious. It definitely spoiled my appetite, to put it mildly. Can you imagine going to a restaurant where the appetizer is the fried insects and the main course is the balut? I shudder to think what the dessert must be.
  17. Lvdkeyes, you seem to have great recipes for just about everything. Do you have a recipe for making Italian sausage? I can never find anything in Thailand that really resembles the Italian sausage I had become accustomed to. I would imagine asking where to find sausage casings would be too much, but just being able to make the sausage would be great, even without casings.

    That's more than I did. You're a brave soul.

    Eating Cockroaches

Based on what I learned in an entomology course I took a few years ago, none of the "edible" insects are in the cockroach family. One of these "edible" insects strongly resembles cockroaches to the untrained eye, but if you know what to look for you would know at a glance, from the wing structure, that those are not cockroaches, but a type of water insect.Still, I can think of many items I would choose to eat before I start eating insects.
  20. Here is a web site, but it is entirely in Thai. I cannot find an English version.http://www.catcdma.com/home.htm
  21. I just got the following results. Maybe it looks like dial-up, but I assure you it's much faster than that. It may not be as fast as other parts of the world, but I almost always have speed that's fine for me. Besides, what alternative is there in Thailand? You have to take what you can get. I can tell you that these speeds are lightening fast compared to the best that was available only a few years ago. "Broadband speed was just 80% of what they claimed in advertisements,'' said Pol Col Yanapol Yangyuen, the association's president. He said the result was based on tests done by the TWA and the Thai Telecommunications Consumer Protection Institute (TCI) via www.speedtest.or.th from Aug 24 to Oct 25. For example, he said, if a user subscribed to a service claiming a 10 Mbps rate, the actual speed was just 8 Mbps. He said that 846,737 broadband users participated throughout the two-month test. While download speeds were 20% lower than claimed, upload speeds were far lower. Among all ISPs, Samart Corp offered the best services with both download and upload speeds almost the same. For True Corporation, he said, download speed averaged 8 Mbps while upload speed was just 1 Mbps. Triple T Broadband which provides the Max-net service, delivered 78% of advertised download speed, Internet Solution and Service Provider 70%, CS Loxinfo 69%, TOT 68%, I-Net 64% and CAT Telecom 51%. Pol Col Yanapol also said that each ISP needed to improve service quality, and in particular to narrow the gap between download and upload speeds.
  22. It was not the O-A. It was the standard retirement visa. He did it in the Pattaya immigration office. I was there with him and it didn't present any problem at all. He also had to go to the Bangkok immigration office for something related to the process, but I really don't recall why.I'm not totally clear on this, but what he had was a retirement visa. Then he got a job in a school. He and his employer had to go to go to the office in Chonburi to get his work permit. I can't remember which came first, but at some point I went with him to the Pattaya immigration office and the visa type was changed, for fees of course. We were in and out in fifteen minutes.
  23. Bob is correct. Got to MY SETTINGS. Then select PROFILE. You will see one option to change your avatar and another to change your photo. Whatever you select as your photo will be what appears in today's top posters. It can be the same photo that you use for an avatar.
  24. I have two problems with that. The first would be to wonder if the teachers would be able to find any fifth graders who aren't already screwed up. The second would be to question about the intervention. It seems to me that ever since about the early 1960s any time people start 'intervening' with school kids the whole system gets steadily worse and the ones doing the intervening leave behind kids who are more screwed up than they already were.
