Just started watching it recently. I'm at the end of the 4th season, waiting for Season 5 to come out on DVD in two weeks. Really liking it so far. Really dig Hurley...Sayid and Locke are pretty cool, too. Any other fans here?

Jesus Christ...this story is just insane. Where's Bernie Goetz when you need him? A passenger aboard a northbound D train in Midtown Manhattan was stabbed to death early Saturday after arguing with another man over a seat in the subway car, the authorities said. The victim, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the Seventh Avenue station at West 53rd Street. He had been stabbed in the face and neck with a steak knife, which was recovered at the scene, the police said. More

I love that...I'm sooo gonna steal it!

Dowd's right on with in referring to Palin's visceral appeal. She's charismatic and superb at projecting that "aw, shucks, I'm just a regular ol' American just like you" image that appeals to people who'd rather not have to think too hard. And she doesn't try to offer them real ideas and progressive policies, but instead parrots their own fears and insecurities back at them, which makes them feel validated. In other words, she's the perfect politician for stupid people...of which we have far too many.

Apparently, an episode of "South Park" from a few years ago gave kids the idea to go around kicking redheads on Nov. 20 each year. Given that I'm a ginger (or was when I still had hair), I'm glad I'm not in school anymore. Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives are investigating an assault on a 12-year-old middle school boy in Calabasas who may have been targeted after a Facebook group urged students to beat up redheads, a sheriff's official said Saturday. The boy was kicked and hit in two incidents on the campus of A.E. Wright Middle School by as many as 14 of his classmates, Lt. Richard Erickson said. The students who participated in the attack may have been motivated by a Facebook message telling them that Friday was "Kick a Ginger Day," Erickson said. "Ginger" is a label given to people with red hair, freckles and fair skin, Erickson said, adding that the victim has red hair. He said the Facebook message may have been inspired by an episode of the animated television show "South Park." An episode in 2005 focused on prejudice against "gingers" after one of the characters said people with red hair, light skin and freckles have no souls and suffer from a disease called "Gingervitus." This reminds me of that scene in "Sea of Love" when Pacino and the other NYPD detectives throw a phony meet-the-Yankees event and arrest all the crooks who answer the invitation. A novel approach based on greed works wonders for crime fighters Enter police inspector Utane Noui-pin who, with a plan novel to Thailand, a few well crafted letters and a clever marketing strategy has lured some odious criminals into his clutches without having to break a sweat. Pol Lt Col Utane's innovative plan has just caught six suspects in rape-related crimes in Samut Prakan at a cost of just 15 baht each. It all started when the concept of using an operation called "You've Got Lucky Mail" flashed through his mind one day. The idea struck him as he was discussing with his subordinates at Police Region 1 headquarters whether there were better ways to catch elusive criminals... ...What the investigators did was write invitation letters asking the suspects to come and collect rewards being offered to them by Sanji Electric Co (Thailand), a fake company. The letters were posted to the addresses of the suspects stated in their house registrations to lure them out of hiding. "You are lucky person No 8 and entitled to our third prize, a Sanji Super Wifi 3800 stereo with double 3800-watt speakers worth 28,500 baht," read one letter. It asked the receiver to fill in the required information, including his telephone number, on an attached form for further contact. A week after sending out the letters, Samtep Saiarun, 16, was the first to reply. He was told to receive the award in Bangkok where he would be welcomed by "company staff" at the Mor Chit northern bus terminal. Pol Lt Col Utane clearly remembers the moment Samtep met his team on Oct 27. He smiled when he was greeted by the undercover police. But within minutes Samtep's face turned pale when he was handcuffed and told "You're caught, kid." More

You're right...in fact, they usually think they're much smarter than they actually are. And speaking of Sarah Palin...

Remember the 80s and early 90s, when there were great comedy clubs everywhere? Now, except for New York and LA, it's almost impossible to find a decent place. Most of the ones I've seen in the last 10 years have been little airport hotel lounges with third-rate acts. I'd love to see stand-up comedy get hot again.

Nicely played.

Guess I've all but given up on file sharing sites. Too many accidentally and intentionally mislabeled files, or jackasses uploading viruses instead of movies. I don't mind spending the $29/mo. to get just about anything I want.

That's great that you're doing that. I regret that I've never stayed with a language long enough to become fluent, so I admire it when someone else does. And you're right, you really have to speak the language to get the full experience living in another country. -
American Man Gets 20 Years for Molesting Thai Children

That's why many states have civil commitment laws which provide for continued incarceration for sex offenders deemed to still be a danger after serving prison sentences. Technically, they're supposed to be "hospitalized" for treatment, but the reality is, as you mentioned, many of them can't actually be "fixed," so their commitment just ends up being an extension of the prison sentence...and I have no problem with that. Many sex crimes should be capital offenses anyway. Of course, these programs have not been without their problems. Check out this series the New York Times ran a couple of years ago. -
Great. This is all we need. So-called evidence to help support the idiotic ideas of these global warming deniers. Hacked E-Mail Is New Fodder for Climate Dispute Hundreds of private e-mail messages and documents hacked from a computer server at a British university are causing a stir among global warming skeptics, who say they show that climate scientists conspired to overstate the case for a human influence on climate change. The e-mail messages, attributed to prominent American and British climate researchers, include discussions of scientific data and whether it should be released, exchanges about how best to combat the arguments of skeptics, and casual comments — in some cases derisive — about specific people known for their skeptical views. Drafts of scientific papers and a photo collage that portrays climate skeptics on an ice floe were also among the hacked data, some of which dates back 13 years. More

I'm not sure even the people making this claim believe it...I think it's one of those deals where they're hoping that the lie, repeated often enough, will become truth.

Several things about this story that I don't get. A "gratuity" is defined as a gift given over and above payment due. So, how can the restaurant demand that they pay this gratuity, then call it theft when they don't? Even if the gratuity is mandatory, once the customers complained about what sounds like atrocious service, wouldn't any decent manager have automatically waived it? Plus what the hell kind of cop is going to take someone into custody over a $16.35 theft? That's a minor misdemeanor, for which he should have issued a notice to appear in court, at best. College students arrested for not paying tip It was an evening out that college students Leslie Pope and John Wagner will long remember. Not only did they get what they called lousy service, they got handcuffed and arrested. All over a $16.35 tip. They were with a half-dozen friends at the Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem last month, so the establishment tacked what it called a mandatory 18 percent gratuity onto the bill of about $73, according to reports. Pope and Wagner refused to pay. "You can't give us terrible, terrible service and expect a tip," said Pope, a 22-year-old Moravian College senior who's a Pottsville native, according to the Lehigh Valley Express-Times. More

Instead, the fat bastard who apparently is his boss seemed to get a big kick (pardon the pun) out of the whole thing. At the very least, the officer is a humorless prick. I guarantee you, if that had been a regular citizen recorded kicking a cat, somebody would have been giving him a citation of some sort.

This is too funny... He wrote Gov. Bev Perdue, referring to the patient's "irresponsible orgasm" that resulted in children whose medical care is provided by Medicaid. He fired off numerous letters to the medical board, noting that its rules nauseate him and, among other things, that "the biggest hoax on mankind" is the Drug Enforcement Administration. Sunderhaus notified The News & Observer that he was about to be "screwed" by the medical board. He admitted he told the patient that thick eyeglasses would not cause her to go blind "but her thick thighs and diabetes would." "I poked her thigh to emphasize that diabetes is the leading cause of blindness," he said Thursday. "People have got to accept criticism without getting their bowels in an uproar." Apparently, he also tried to give $20 to the reporter writing this story...even tucked it into her sweater. At 77, it sounds like he may have finally gone 'round the bend. Probably time to retire.

Yeah, but I can't find an online source where the downloads are DVD quality...plus the great thing about Netflix is the depth and breadth of the library...everything from 80s TV shows to current releases.

Yeah, I loved the part where the kid told the teacher "with all due respect...jump off a bridge."
