    Off His Rocker

I think it did hit the fan for him.
  3. It is obvious that you are not living in Pattaya. Here Songkran lasts for six (6) days. When I was coming here as a tourist, it was one day and that was fun, but 6 days gets very old fast. You cannot go out without being soaked and slapped with talc or rice paste. The first year I lived here Ihad to go to the supermarket and, of course, I was soaked when I got there. With the A/C and being soaking wet I started to shiver uncontrollably and had to leave the market without finishing my shopping. Here some (mostly drunken farang) put ice in the water. They even rent water truck with about 5 inch diameter hoses to spray, even spraying people on motorbikes and have a good laugh if they knock them down. It has gotten so far out of hand, the only thing for me to do is leave the country. My Thai bf is a singer and when he lived in Udon, he was performing at an outdoor Songkran event. Some idiot threw a bucket of water at him while he was on stage singing holding an electric microphone. He was lucky not to be electrocuted.
  4. Spanish is much easier than Thai to learn. Thai is a tonal language with five tones. If you don't get the tone right, you may insult someone or they just won't understand you.
  5. There are others on this board who are more qualified.
  6. Judging by our avatars, I would have to agree with you regarding looks. Age wise I am past Medicare age, but not dead yet.
  7. Thais us a different alphabet than westerners. Here are some random letters: สน่่หà¸à¸£à¹‰à¸£à¸±à¸£à¸à¸”่่ไทืรำà¹à¸•à¸·à¸”น I don't read, write or speak Thai, so the letters I just typed don't have any meaning. When Thais is transliterated into western alphabet the spelling can vary greatly. TH is pronounced like western T with a breathy sound after it, not like we pronounce it. PH is similarly not pronounced as we do. Phuket is not pronounced as Fucket, but rather as Pooket with the breathy sound. R's are often pronounced as L's and L's as R's.
  8. I suspect ladyboys turn to crime because of various reasons. One might be that it is difficult for them to get regular jobs. The hormones they take do make them act a little weird at times too. When I was working I encountered several ladyboys and some of them told me the hormones make then feel "dingy".
  9. I love Loy Krathong, but hate Songkran. I leave Thailand every during that crazy raucous dangerous time.

    Paella

That is the good thing about recipes, usually you can alter them to your available ingredients and taste. Saffron is very expensive. It adds color and some flavor, but you can substitute a little turmeric. I guess atsuete would work too. Calsparra rice is a short grain rice, much like risotto rice. Plain rice will work, but it won't give the creaminess that paella usually has. Do not use glutinous /sticky rice.
  11. Google vowels and you will see that Y is a vowel sometimes.

    Acai Berries

Some people object to Wal-Mart saying they are crushing small businesses with unfair advantages. Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world, they buy in huge quantities so they can keep their prices lower. I think this is an advantage for most people who are on limited budgets. When I was in the US I shopped at Wal-Mart often. Their newest superstores have almost anything you would want to buy, food, appliances, toys, etc. Shopping there saves running all over town.
  13. What I learned in school was the vowels were: "a, e i, o, u and sometimes y."
  14. Bob, I find myself agreeing with your postings the vast majority of the time.
  15. Some of these laws like helmet and seat belt laws not only protect people against themselves, but also protect the rest of us by keeping insurance claims and/or rate lower. The war on drugs is another example, protecting (attempting) others against the drug related crimes.
  16. I wonder how much money was made by manipulating the market.
  17. Glad they got him in time. The piper must be paid.
  18. It's too bad there were no photos attached to the article.
  19. They are lucky to have basic needs in Somalia.
  20. AHA! But "y" is sometimes a vowel.
  21. I will be interested to see how the poster will defend (rationalize) it.
  22. After I build a house here in Thailand, I would book a trip to US with my bf to see NYC, Memphis, New Orleans, San Antonio, San Diego, SF and then Chicago. Then we would go on a long cruise to recuperate to get ready for a trip to India, China, Nepal and Tibet before heading to Egypt, Morocco and Europe. We would stay in each place until we were ready to move on.
