I guess there's a difference of opinion on how big a deal is a one day overstay. While I doubt that anyone would actually go to jail for overstaying one day with a plane ticket out in his possesion, I wouldn't want an overstay stamped on my passport. I think it's easy to get a 7 day extension (or maybe even 14) by going to Immigration in Jomtien and paying up. There are some border towns in Cambodia, and for about 2000 baht a van will bring you there and back in the same day.
