Wino
I don't mind the crowds every once in a while, but find it nice to admire the spectacular fireworks from afar.
rucus7
A one week count down to the New Year. Seems like a not so subtle attempt to generate revenue. Any reason to indulge, in a city (Pattatya) that needs no excuse already?
lvdkeyes
I wonder how much money was spent, as opposed to revenue, on fireworks during the countdown.
Beer Chang
Any reason to indulge, in a city (Pattatya) that needs no excuse already? Events like these are attempt to broaden Pattaya's appeal beyond sex tourism.
Thaimo
I wonder how much money was spent, as opposed to revenue, on fireworks during the countdown. I think that is a legitimate question. I wonder if such information is published anywhere. I'm curious about it myself.
lvdkeyes
I read that a budget of 8 Mil baht was set for the Countdown. Not sure what additional revenue was brought in.
Wino
The city does things like this to bring in the tourists. If you factor in the money spent on hotels, food, gifts and the like, I should think the city fathers thought it was worthwhile.
Beer Chang
The city does things like this to bring in the tourists. If you factor in the money spent on hotels, food, gifts and the like, I should think the city fathers thought it was worthwhile. Especially since they're trying to attract the "right kind of tourists".
lvdkeyes
My question is did it bear out to bring in more tourist money than NY Eve has in the past, (proportionately, of course)?
Beer Chang
Walking Street was packed New Year's Eve, seemed more crowded than last year.
lvdkeyes
That's a subjective view point really, isn't it?
Beer Chang
Very subjective. But Soi VC seemed to have more traffic the year before.

Beer Chang
It wouldn't surprise me if this year's peak season is busier than last given that last year's was right after the airport closure.
Wino
Wouldn't surprise me as well, if this year's tourist season is busier than last year's. I think promotions like Pattaya's Countdown to 2010 is a big draw, especially to many Thais from Bangkok.
